Apple is reportedly working with LG Display, a display solutions arm of LG, on a foldable iPhone. A report out of South Korea claims that LG Display has created a task force to develop a foldable OLED screen for an iPhone model likely to be launched in 2020. The report adds LG Innotek is also working on developing flexible printed circuit board or RFPCB for the foldable iPhones.

The report by The Investor, citing industry sources, claims that the panel production will start from 2020. That may mean Apple could postpone its iPhone launch that year. However, the report adds that foldable display panel production for iPhones may start by early 2019.

Samsung, however, seems to have an edge over Apple when it comes to foldable smartphones . The rumoured Galaxy X featuring foldable display is said to launch next year. The company currently is supplying first batch of foldable panels to some Chinese handset makers as well as to its parent company.

The report adds that LG has been working on its own foldable OLED panels for years, and is reportedly improving its durability as well as yield rate. For those unaware, Samsung is currently the sole supplier of OLED panels for the iPhone X. The report adds that Samsung can be expected to be supplier of displays for Apple next year too.

LG is said to be working on a new production plant in Paju, South Korea, dubbed E6. Some sources claim that Apple may invest in LG’s new plant to beef up OLED panel production though details are yet to be finalised.
