CHENNAI: Many people prefer to buy online from the comfort of their homes instead of taking the trouble to physically visit shops, though one can get bargain offers at retail shops. These days, one can get the best price while shopping online, too, through discount coupons.

Discount coupon sites

Scan popular coupon sites like GrabOn, CouponDunia or Nearbuy. If you like an offer listed by them, click on it and you will get full details like cost of the coupon, size of the discount and saving, and an expiry date of the same. To avail the offer, click on the ‘buy now’ button. You may have to pay a small amount, though there are a number of free coupons on offer. Subsequently, you can redeem these coupons at the participating business (which may be an online retailer or a bricks-and-mortar business).

Aggregators and cashback

With the popularity of these discount coupon sites growing, ‘aggregator’ sites have sprung up, which collect the best deals from many coupon websites. CashKaro, funded by Ratan Tata and Kalaari Capital, is one such site which not only offers deals from a wide range of businesses but also provides cashback offers to customers for every purchase.

Swati Bhargava, co-founder, CashKaro.com, says a recent travel survey by the firm showed that 61 per cent respondents browse 3-4 websites before taking a decision. “When asked to choose between the kinds of offers travellers like, travel site credits, bank offers or cashback, 46 per cent respondents said they are always on the lookout for extra cashback offers.”

The business

Referring to cashback deals, Swati said the business earns commission for every sale/transaction it drives to the partner retailer. The website keeps a significant share of the  commission received for driving the sale (20-50 per cent) and the remaining money is given back to the customers as real cash, which they can further transfer it to their bank accounts.

Promoting sale just before the deal is about to end is a common trick cashback & coupon websites do to trigger customers’ buying desire. For instance, these sites often come up with a unique idea to promote a discount code on the checkout page.
