Amazon has changed its returns policy for electronic items like tablets, laptops, desktops, monitors, cameras and camera lenses. According to the Amazon policy page if you’ve bought a laptop or tablet or any of the other item in the list on or after May 11, you can’t simply return the product and hope for a full refund. Exchange in case of a defective product still remains.
Amazon’s page reads, “In case you have received a defective or a damaged product, you will be eligible for a free replacement… Damaged/ defective items must be returned in the original condition they were received in with all the accompanying accessories.”
In short, the little insurance you had while buying these electronics, that one could simply return them for full refund, is now gone. Of course, it’s not something most users rely on all the time, given some of these electronic items are bought after a solid research.

However, it does mean that if you end up with a defective product, a full refund is out of question, and instead you will have to settle for a replacement, which might not appeal to some users. Of course, Amazon is not the only e-commerce company that denies “returns and full refund” on electronics.

Snapdeal’s policy on defective electronics says they will require a document from the brand/OEM centre confirming the delivered item was defective, and returns/replacement will be accepted only for products confirmed as faulty.
What if you are dissatisfied with an item and just want to return it? Well forget about that because Snapdeal’s list of items not eligible under this criteria pretty much covers anything and everything one can think of; from electronics to pet food to clothes to inner-wear. Frankly the last one is understandable.
Also as Snapdeal reminds users you can’t just buy an automobile like two-wheelers, four-wheelers and commercial vehicles, and then cancel the purchase.
Flipkart, the other big e-commerce player, has a seller specific return/replacement policy. Flipkart’s page reads, “If you have received an item in a ‘Damaged’ or ‘Defective’ condition, or it is ‘Not as Described’ by the Seller, you may request a replacement at no extra cost. Return Policy is Seller specific and terms may differ. Please check the respective Seller’s policy when buying or before initiating a return for a replacement.”
So if you’re likely to change your mind about a product, just make sure you check the Seller’s policy on returns, refunds before hitting buy button. Also any product which has a manufacturer warranty, and comes defective is not eligible for return. This will most likely include electronic items like laptops, mobiles, etc, which do come with a manufacturer warranty and thus can’t be returned.
Of course, the ‘returns’ policy is not something that you might want to exercise with every purchase and most players are ready to offer a replacement/exchange. This is subject to the fact you don’t miss out on the stipulated time period.
For the more picky buyers, who like to return their electronics for a full refund, guess that option is now truly gone with Amazon.
