Maben Home, Garden Club meets

The Gala Gals of the Maben Home and Garden Club were full of exuberance and chatter as they kicked off the 2016-17 club year at the Trace-Way Restaurant in Mathiston on Sept. 20.

The room was gaily decorated in maroon and white linen, maroon mums, pompoms and rally yells; the crowd was all ready for the kickoff, being led by Sylvia Templeton, who is serving her second term as president.

The highlight of the meeting was the issuance of the club yearbooks, once again prepared by club secretary Dottie Dewberry and assisted by Faye Fulgham. Dates, times, places and assignments were discussed amid a hover of loud chatter. Finally after a multitude of questions things calmed down to a loud rumble as committees made announcements and addresses were added to the yearbook as the club added two new members: Lorene Cox and Dee Saylors. The club also added returning member Kay Lewis to the group.

Monthly leaders were made aware of their duties: remind all members of meeting date, reserve restaurant, decorate if needed, remind members that have assignments, remind program speaker of time and place, and any other duty that makes for smooth running of a meeting.

The afternoon devotion, “Strength for Today,” was taken from “A Gardener`s Little Devotional Book,” after which the blessing was given by Dottie Dewberry.

The Yard of the Month sign was moved by Joyce Hays to the yard of Emanuel and Brenda Roberson. The months of June, July and August will be added to the list of months for presenting the YOM sign. Jane Collins, Pat Harpole and Lynn Head`s names were added for this duty.

Martha McMinn, calendar chairman, announced that monies and lists were due in by Oct. 1. The calendars should be back for delivery in November.

Members were reminded that dues were payable now.

Membership Jackie Christopher, membership chairman, asked for prospective member names to be submitted to her.

It was duly noted four members had perfect attendance for the 2015-16 club year: Jane Collins, Dottie Dewberry, Martha McMinn and Sylvia Templeton.

The door prizes donated by Sylvia Templeton (maroon mums) were won by Polly Miller and Lynn Head.

The club adjourned until Oct. 18 at Center Grove Fellowship Hall.
