PlayStation VR Works With Xbox One, Windows PC, and Wii U; Just Not How You'd Expect

HIGHLIGHTS

  • PS VR displays 2D content when used with a Wii U, Xbox One or Windows PC
  • You will not be able to derive native VR with these devices
  • Suffice to say it should function this way with other HDMI devices too

With the PlayStation VR (PS VR) hitting store shelves this week, some users have gone beyond using it with the PS4.

Reports have been trickling in of Sony’s maiden VR effort working on the Wii U and the Xbox One, as well as the Windows PC. Doing so on Nintendo’s soon to be obsoleteconsole lets you play games as you would on a bigger screen as it did on the Xbox One. It even booted up on a Windows desktop when on PC.

Don’t expect content from the aforementioned device to be in native VR though. It simply displays regular 2D content from standard HDMI inputs. While the rest of the world is busy tinkering with PS VR, Sony is giving India its first taste of the device this weekend, hinting at an India release date soon.

“For those who are looking forward to its launch, we would like to thank everyone for their patience and continued support. We are beyond excited to deliver to them the amazing experience that PS VR offers. The launch date will be confirmed in due course of time,” said Robert Fisser, VP and General Manager (Middle East, Africa, Turkey, India), Sony Interactive Entertainment Europe in a prepared statement earlier this week.

In our initial impressions, we noted that PS VR, while being an intriguing piece of kit, isn’t exactly thegame changer we hoped it would be. It will be interesting to see if the final version of the device changes our mind when we check it out.
