“One can never overstate the importance of accessories,” said legendary French designer Yves Saint Laurent. Coinciding with the recent openings of both the Musée Yves Saint Laurent Paris and the Musée Yves Saint Laurent Marrakech, Yves Saint Laurent Accessories is the first book to showcase the designer’s iconic couture accessories. Inside readers will find favourites including the square-buckle heels Saint Laurent designed with Roger Vivier to complement his renowned Mondrian dresses in 1965 to his signature turbans, which continue to top the label’s runway looks in various iterations to this day.
“[Saint Laurent] could not conjure up dresses without imagining the requisite jewellery, gloves and hats…he saw them as encapsulating the spirit or mood of an outfit,” writes author Patrick Mauriès in the book’s foreword. Altogether, the Phaidon-published tome, developed in close collaboration with the Fondation Pierre Bergé–Yves Saint Laurent, features 400 images spanning the designer’s nearly 50-year career, including specially commissioned photographs and previously unpublished archival material. The book also takes readers behind the scenes with design sketches, intimate portraits and candid Polaroid shots. The culmination is a feast of finishing touches for the eyes.
