Search around for Amtrak’s military or veteran discount and you’ll get different percentages from different sites. Here’s the standing, confirmed program — and why older write-ups don’t always agree.

The standing discount: 10% off, systemwide

Amtrak offers an everyday 10% discount on standard fares to active-duty service members, veterans, and their spouses and dependents, across the Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard. It applies systemwide — Northeast Regional, State-Supported trains, and long-distance routes like the California Zephyr, Southwest Chief, Crescent, and Auto Train.

What it doesn’t cover

• Not valid on Acela weekday service
• Not valid with Saver fares (Amtrak’s cheapest fare class) — this is the biggest catch, since it means the discount often can’t stack with the lowest available price
• Not valid on non-Acela Business Class, First Class, or sleeping-car accommodations
• Not valid on the Canadian portion of joint Amtrak/VIA Rail service

How to get it

Select “Military Veteran” or “Military Active (Adult)” as your passenger type when booking on Amtrak.com or the app. The discount applies automatically to the fare — no promo code needed. Proof of status may be requested.

Why the numbers online don’t always match

Amtrak’s veterans discount has a messy history — it was discontinued for a period, publicly criticized by lawmakers and veterans’ groups, then reinstated as the 10% everyday discount described above. Older articles referencing 15% or other figures are describing past versions of the program, or regional add-on programs (like California’s Pacific Surfliner corridor, which layers its own regional veteran, senior, and student discounts on top of the systemwide fare). Student and senior discounts also exist on Amtrak but follow separate terms — always confirm the exact figure at checkout, since it applies automatically once you select the right passenger type.
