Nidec Group acquires OMRON Automotive Electronics

Expected benefits include synergies between Nidec Mobility

OMRON Automotive Electronics has become part of the Nidec Group. Now known as Nidec Mobility, the company will work closely with Nidec’s automotive motor business unit to develop new modules and systems that combine the motors, pumps and gears of the Nidec Group with the electronic control units, and other electronic components, of Nidec Mobility.

Expected benefits include synergies between Nidec Mobility’s electronic control units and Nidec’s electric power steering motors and traction motor systems, a combined and stronger lineup of ADAS-sensors, and expanded production capacity.

Nidec Mobility traces its roots back to 1983 when a division of OMRON Corporation specialising in on-board car components was established. Since then, the car-electronics manufacturer has grown to encompass over 5000 employees in several regions around the world: Japan, Asia-Pacific, the Americas and Europe. The company’s product portfolio ranges from motor control systems to switches, Lidar instruments and other sensors.

Nidec started out as a manufacturer of small electric motors for appliances and other machines in 1973. Initially a company of only four engineers, it has now grown into a global company group employing over 100,000 people in more than 40 countries across the world. Positioned as one of the company’s key strategic businesses, Nidec’s automotive motor business is centered on motors involved in the primary functions of ‘driving, turning and stopping’, but also includes electronic control devices and ADAS-related products such as millimetre-wave radar units.

Nidec today is a world-leading comprehensive motor manufacturer encompassing more than 300 subsidiaries employing over 100,000 people throughout the world and with annual sales exceeding $13 billion (Rs 93,054 crore). Nidec’s motors, drives, generators and related products are found in a diverse range of applications including computers, smartphones, home appliances, automobiles, manufacturing plants, robots and more.
