Coupons at Costco: There Are No Codes — How the Member-Only Savings Book, Instant Rebates and the 2% Reward Actually Work

Last checked: September 11, 2026. Costco Wholesale — roughly 600 U.S. warehouses. Membership required to shop (with limited exceptions noted below). Promotion dates rotate roughly monthly.

People search “coupons at Costco” about as often as any store on earth, and the honest answer fits in one sentence: Costco does not accept manufacturer coupons and does not issue promo codes. Every discount Costco offers is built into the shelf price or applied automatically at the register and online. That’s not a dead end — it means the discounts are impossible to miss once you know where they live. This page explains each one.

The monthly savings book is the “coupon”

Costco mails members a booklet — the Member-Only Savings book — and posts the same offers on Costco.com under Warehouse Savings. Each event runs about three to four weeks with published start and end dates, and the next one usually begins within days of the last ending. The discounts are typically $2–$8 per item on groceries, household goods and health products, with larger dollar-off amounts on electronics, tires and appliances.

You don’t clip anything. When a book item scans at the register the discount comes off automatically. The book is just a preview. Two habits make it work harder:

  • Read the fine print for “limit” and “while supplies last.” Most book items have a per-member limit (often 5 or 10). Popular items sell out early in the window.
  • Look for book items marked “Online Only” or “In-Warehouse Only.” The two channels do not always carry the same offers.

How to read a Costco price tag

Costco’s shelf tags carry information most shoppers never decode. None of it is official policy, but it has been consistent for years:

  • Prices ending in .99 are standard.
  • Prices ending in .97 are manager markdowns — usually clearance, usually the lowest that item will go.
  • Prices ending in .00 or .88 are commonly returned, damaged-box or last-unit items marked down by the warehouse.
  • An asterisk (*) in the corner of the tag means the item is being discontinued and won’t be restocked. Buy it now or don’t.

A .97 price with an asterisk is the strongest “buy it now” signal in the building.

Executive Membership: when the 2% pays for itself

Costco’s Gold Star membership is $65 a year; Executive is $130. Executive members earn a 2% annual reward on most Costco and Costco.com purchases, capped at $1,250. The break-even is simple: the extra $65 in dues is covered once you spend $3,250 in a year, which is about $270 a month. Above that, the upgrade is pure profit. Below it, Gold Star is the better deal. Costco also lets you downgrade and get the difference refunded if the reward doesn’t cover the extra cost — ask at the membership counter.

Stacking the Costco Anywhere Visa

The Costco-branded Citi card pays 2% on Costco purchases (plus higher rates on gas, EV charging, restaurants and travel). It stacks with the Executive 2% reward, so an Executive member paying with the card is effectively earning 4% back on every Costco purchase, on top of any Member-Only Savings discount. The card has no annual fee beyond the membership itself.

Ways to shop Costco without a membership

  • Costco Shop Cards (gift cards) let non-members shop in the warehouse and online, though Costco.com charges non-members a surcharge on most items.
  • Pharmacy is open to non-members in most states by law.
  • Food court access policies vary; Costco has tightened membership checks at many warehouses.
  • Costco Travel and Costco.com deliveries via Instacart are available to non-members, with a markup.

What we could not verify

  • The specific items and dates in the current Member-Only Savings book at your warehouse. Regional books differ and rotate monthly; check Costco.com’s Warehouse Savings page for your ZIP code.
  • Whether an individual .97 or asterisk item is in stock at your location.
  • Costco.com non-member surcharge percentage — Costco publishes it as “a surcharge” without a fixed rate on all listings.

FAQ

Does Costco take manufacturer coupons? No. Costco’s policy is that it does not accept them, in-warehouse or online.

Is there a Costco promo code for new members? Costco periodically runs new-member offers (often a Shop Card with a new membership) through partners and its own site, but these are not entered as codes at checkout. Any site listing “Costco promo codes” is listing invented ones.

Do Costco coupons work online? Warehouse Savings offers marked “Online” apply automatically on Costco.com. In-warehouse-only offers do not.

How much is Costco membership? $65 for Gold Star, $130 for Executive, as of Costco’s most recent published fee schedule.

Coupon and code policy, membership fees, the Executive reward, and Warehouse Savings mechanics are from Costco’s own site and membership terms.
