Dollar General runs the most-used digital coupon program in discount retail, and its signature offer — $5 off a $25 purchase on Saturdays — is the closest thing to a standing 20% coupon that any national retailer publishes. It is also surrounded by confusion: it isn’t always in every account, it has rules about what counts toward $25, and the paper-coupon and DG Cash layers work differently. Here’s the whole system.

The $5 off $25: rules that decide whether it works
- It has to be clipped. Open the DG app (or dollargeneral.com signed in) and clip the coupon before you shop. It appears in the Coupons tab, usually early in the week, for the coming Saturday.
- It’s Saturday only. The coupon is date-bound. Sunday it’s gone.
- $25 is measured after other discounts. Sale prices, other digital coupons and paper coupons reduce the subtotal first; the $5 comes off a subtotal that’s still $25 or more after those. Plan the basket at $27–$30 pre-coupon to be safe.
- Exclusions. Typical exclusions are gift cards, prepaid cards, tobacco, alcohol where sold, lottery, and some regulated categories. DG prints the current list on the coupon.
- Enter your phone number at the register. That’s how the account’s clipped coupons apply. Without it, nothing clips.
- It isn’t in every account every week. DG targets it. Most active accounts see it most weeks, but if it’s missing, it’s missing.
The math: $5 off $25 is a flat 20% on a $25 basket and decreases as the basket grows. Splitting a $50 shop into two $25 Saturdays is worth $10; one $50 Saturday is worth $5.
Digital coupons: the layer under the Saturday coupon
Beyond the $5 off, the app carries dozens of manufacturer and DG-brand digital coupons. Clip everything relevant before shopping; they apply automatically when the item scans and your phone number is entered. The stack DG allows is the standard drugstore-style stack: one manufacturer coupon per item (digital or paper, not both) plus one DG coupon, then the $5 off $25 on top, then DG Cash.
DG Cash
DG Cash is the rewards currency in the myDG account. It’s earned through app offers (“buy X, earn $Y DG Cash”) and periodic promotions, and redeemed at checkout. Watch the expiration — DG Cash has a shorter life than most store rewards.

DG’s ad runs Sunday–Saturday and leans on multi-buy pricing (“2 for $5,” “buy 2 get 1 free”) and instant-savings tags.
