Last checked: September 15, 2026. Sonic Drive-In — about 3,500 U.S. locations, mostly franchised. Offer mechanics are from the Sonic app and sonicdrivein.com; prices and participation are set locally.
Sonic’s discounts are unusually structured: the best one is tied to the clock, the second-best is tied to the app, and there are no codes at all. “Sonic deals” as a search mostly means the half-price drinks, and that offer has moved from a public happy hour to an app perk over the years — which is why so many pages describe it wrong. Here’s the current structure and how to use it.

Half-price drinks: the app version vs the happy-hour version
Two different things get called “Sonic happy hour”:
- The app perk. Ordering a drink or slush through the Sonic app gets you half price, any time of day, at participating drive-ins. This is the reliable version and the one Sonic itself promotes. It requires placing the order in the app (order ahead, then check in at the stall or drive-thru).
- The drive-in happy hour. Some franchises still run an afternoon window (traditionally 2–4 PM) with discounted drinks and slushes for walk-up and stall orders without the app. This is franchise-by-franchise; a drive-in that doesn’t advertise it likely doesn’t offer it.
The practical rule: order in the app and you don’t need to know your local happy-hour rules.
The math: a Route 44 drink or slush at menu price can run $3–$4. Half price through the app makes Sonic one of the cheapest large fountain drinks in fast food, which is the whole reason the perk is famous.
The app Deals tab
Beyond drinks, Sonic rotates offers in the app: a dollar amount off an order over a threshold, a discounted combo, or a free item with purchase. Like every chain that has moved to app-only offers, these are account-tied and never appear as shareable codes. New app accounts typically see a welcome offer. Check Deals before ordering; offers stack with the half-price drink perk when the terms allow (the app tells you at checkout).
Value menu and bundles
Sonic maintains a low-price tier (small items in the $1–$3 range) and periodically runs a bundled meal at a fixed price point. Bundles are limited-time and franchise-participation; the menu board or app shows what’s live at your location. When a bundle is running, it usually beats assembling the same items separately by a couple of dollars.
Ordering tips that save money
- Every drink through the app. This alone halves the cost of the most-ordered item at Sonic.
- Size logic: because the discount is a percentage, the largest size saves the most in dollars.
- Skip third-party delivery. Marked-up prices, fees, and no app perks.
- Check Deals for a $-off threshold before building a family order; adding one small item to cross the threshold often nets a larger discount.
What we could not verify
- Whether your drive-in runs a non-app happy hour and its hours.
- Current bundle pricing and availability — franchise-set and limited-time.
- Current app welcome offer and Rewards thresholds.

Offer provenance
App drink perk, Deals tab and Rewards mechanics are from the Sonic app and sonicdrivein.com. Happy-hour and bundle details are labeled franchise-dependent because Sonic publishes participation as varying by location. No checkout test was performed. See how we verify and our editorial policy.
