Black Friday Christmas tree deals at these retailers are mostly automatic sale prices, not coupon codes. Home Depot’s Black Friday Savings Event runs Nov. 5 to Nov. 25 and includes 6.5-foot LED pre-lit artificial trees for $49.98. Walmart, Target and Lowe’s have posted their event dates, and Lowe’s names pre-lit artificial trees in its Thanksgiving-week savings. Balsam Hill advertises “Up to 50% Off” but showed no sale products when we checked. The bigger difference is policy: Target and Balsam Hill adjust their own price drops for 14 days, Home Depot for 30 days but not on Black Friday purchases, and Walmart.com doesn’t adjust at all.

How each retailer handles Christmas tree sales
The Home Depot
The one tree deal Home Depot named in its Black Friday announcement is 6.5-foot LED pre-lit artificial trees for $49.98, during the Nov. 5 to Nov. 25 event. Its holiday release says fresh-cut trees are “coming to stores in November.” Online real-tree listings already showed a 5-6 ft. Fraser fir at $49.98, a 6-7 ft. at $59.98 and an 8-9 ft. at $99.00.
Home Depot adjusts price drops “within 30 days of the purchase date,” but “Special promotions, like Black Friday or flash sales, with short-term or extreme discounts are excluded,” and so are products bought during promotional events. Clearance is excluded, and Home Depot doesn’t match Wayfair, Costco or Sam’s Club. More in our Home Depot price match explainer.
Lowe’s
Lowe’s says Black Friday deals started Oct. 29, with 12 Days of Deals from Nov. 16, Doorbusters for everyone Nov. 27 (MyLowe’s Rewards members get them a day earlier) and December Deal Drops from Dec. 3 to Dec. 24. It lists “select pre-lit artificial Christmas trees” among Thanksgiving-week savings, without prices. Its tree pages ask you to pick a store for pricing and note that “Our local stores do not honor online pricing.”
The Lowe’s Lowest Price Guarantee excludes “Black Friday and various holiday promotions” and “clearance, seasonal, closeout or damaged merchandise,” which covers most trees. Walmart
Walmart’s three events are Early Black Friday Deals (Nov. 12 to Nov. 15), Black Friday Deals (Nov. 23 to Nov. 29, with stores joining Nov. 27) and Cyber Monday (Nov. 30 to Dec. 2). Walmart+ members get early access to “hot Deal drops” on the first day of the first two. Walmart’s Black Friday tree page listed 116 trees with badges such as Rollback, Clearance and Flash Deal; some were Sponsored, so check who sells and ships the tree.
Walmart’s price match policy excludes “Items purchased from Walmart.com that later decrease in price,” competitors and Marketplace sellers. Its holiday return window is long: “Most items purchased in-store or online from October 1 through December 31 are returnable until January 31.” Marketplace sellers set their own terms.
Target
Target says “Early Black Friday deals run Nov. 5–7,” followed by limited-time offers every weekend. Its tree category describes four artificial needle styles and showed no promotions, and its tree deals pages didn’t load for us, so we have no Target tree prices.
Target’s Price Match Guarantee can be requested “at time of purchase or within 14 days after purchase,” and it covers Target’s own lower prices across stores, Target.com and Target Circle deals. Clearance is excluded, and Circle Bonuses and Target coupons can’t be combined with a match. See our Target Circle explainer.
Michaels
Michaels sells full, slim, flocked and pre-lit artificial trees, but its tree pages showed us no products or prices. Its coupons work online, in the app and through mail, email and SMS offers, and are “not accepted in stores.”
The Michaels price guarantee gives Michaels.com orders 7 days for an adjustment through customer service. It also matches identical items on Athome.com, Homedepot.com, Lowes.com, Target.com, Walmart.com and other named sites, but excludes competitors’ “clearance, closeout, or limited-time offers,” so a competitor’s Black Friday price may not qualify. Returns are accepted within 60 days; clearance is final. Our Michaels coupons guide covers the in-store side.
Balsam Hill
Balsam Hill’s Black Friday page read “Black Friday Weekend Sale – Up to 50% Off” but showed “0 Results” and no dates. Its coupons page lists tiered codes from $15 off $350 to $90 off $2,100 with blank expiration lines, one code per order, and exclusions including its Best Price Promise Collection and pre-orders.
Balsam Hill credits the difference if a price drops within 14 days of purchase, net of coupons used; clearance is excluded. Online purchases can be returned “within 30 days of receipt or before December 25 (whichever comes first),” and return labels cost $30 for trees under 7.5 feet, $45 for 7.5 feet and over, and $50 for freight, waived for damaged or defective items.
When retailers say trees go on sale
Only Balsam Hill publishes a buying calendar. Its guide says Black Friday and Cyber Monday “are often the sale events with the most massive price drops before Christmas,” that post-holiday clearance is common from January into February, and that it runs “Spring Black Friday” and Christmas in July promotions. It says prices closer to Christmas “stay steady or even increase,” and suggests late November for fresh trees. The other retailers don’t publish tree-specific timing, so after-Christmas markdowns there are possible but not promised.
The honest math
- Home Depot’s $49.98 tree and the adjustment gap. Buy a Home Depot tree before Nov. 5 and see it in the event, and the 30-day adjustment likely won’t help, because Black Friday and promotional-event prices are excluded. Buying during the event is the reliable way to get the event price.
- Fresh vs. artificial. A 6-7 ft. Fraser fir at $59.98 costs $10 more than the $49.98 pre-lit artificial tree, and you buy it again every season.
- Balsam Hill codes vs. the sale. BALSAMHILL30 takes $30 off a $730 order, about 4.1%. BALSAMHILL90 on $2,100 is about 4.3%. An “up to 50%” sale price, if it covers your tree, is worth far more, and only one code fits per order.
- Balsam Hill return costs. Returning a 7.5-foot tree costs $45, more than the $30 code saves on $730. Measure first.
- Target’s 14 days. Hypothetically, a $150 Target tree that drops to $120 within 14 days qualifies for a $30 match unless the new price is clearance. Walmart.com has no equivalent.
How to save on a Christmas tree without a coupon
- Note your purchase date and adjustment window: 7 days at Michaels online, 14 at Target and Balsam Hill, 30 at Home Depot outside promotional events.
- Check who ships the tree. Walmart, Home Depot and Lowe’s exclude Marketplace sellers from their price policies.
- Match the exact brand, height and model number before asking for a price match.
- Know the return deadline before opening the box: Christmas Day at Lowe’s, Dec. 25 or 30 days at Balsam Hill.
