Merchant: U-Haul · What this page covers: whether U-Haul has public discount or coupon codes, the free month of self-storage, the 1-Year Price Lock, military and student offers, how truck rental rates are built, U-Box and Moving Help costs · Sources: U-Haul’s own pages, listed under Offer provenance.
Is there a U-Haul discount coupon code right now? Not a public one for truck rentals. When we reviewed U-Haul’s Discounts & Specials page, it listed no promo codes for trucks, trailers, storage or U-Box containers. The only codes U-Haul printed were hotel corporate IDs for partner chains. U-Haul’s cart does have an “Apply gift card or discount code” link, but that is for the online store (boxes and supplies), and U-Haul does not publish a general code to type into it. The real savings come from standing programs: a free month of self-storage with a one-way rental, a 12-month price lock on storage, free shipping on larger supply orders, and lower extended rates on pickups and cargo vans.
Most of what you pay U-Haul depends on how the rental is set up: in-town or one-way, truck size, miles, and whether you add storage. Choosing the right rental type, returning on time with matching fuel, and pairing a one-way move with a storage unit usually saves more than a code would.

How U-Haul truck rental rates are actually built
U-Haul’s Truck Rentals FAQ splits pricing into two models:
- In-town (local) rentals: “In-Town move rates include a flat fee for the rental period, plus a per mile charge.” The Truck Rentals page advertises in-town trucks “starting at $19.95.” That is the flat part only. Mileage is added on top at a rate shown in your quote.
- One-way rentals: “One-way move rates are determined by a combination of truck size, point of origin, destination and the date of the move.” The quote “includes an allowed mileage and a set number of days to complete your move.”
The FAQ also lists the charges that catch people out on one-way moves. Extra days cost “$40 per day” for trucks and “$20 per day” for trailers, and going past your allowed mileage is “$1.00 per mile.” You must return the truck with the same fuel level, and “Rental rates can change at any time.”
The Best Rate Guarantee and extended rates
U-Haul’s Best Rate Guarantee article says “Extended rental rates are available exclusively for U-Haul pickup truck and cargo van rentals,” and that at the end of the rental “U-Haul calculates what the best deal for you is based on the days rented and miles driven.” Box trucks are not included.
The article gives sample extended rates: $99 per day with 100 miles, $400 per week with 750 miles, and $1,600 per month with 3,000 miles, each with $0.49 per additional mile. Rates “vary based on equipment, location, and availability,” the vehicle must return to the same location, and taxes and fees are extra.
Example (our math, not a U-Haul quote): You keep a cargo van for 5 days and drive 600 miles, using the sample rates above. Five daily rates come to 5 × $99 = $495 with 500 miles included, plus 100 extra miles × $0.49 = $49, for $544. The weekly rate is $400 with 750 miles included, so 600 miles adds nothing. That is $144 less than stacking daily rates, before taxes and fees. U-Haul says the system picks the lower option for you.
The free month of self-storage
This is U-Haul’s biggest standing offer. The Self-Storage page lists “One Month Free Storage,” with the footnote: “One month free self-storage with one-way equipment rentals at U-Haul and participating Affiliate locations.”
A U-Haul city tip article adds that the offer applies to customers who have rented a truck or trailer “in the past two years,” using the same account as that reservation, and that “This is a one-time special offer, so it can only be used once.” Its wording (“any local or one-way truck or trailer rental”) is broader than the national footnote, so ask your location.
The 1-Year Price Lock on storage
U-Haul’s 1-Year Price Lock page says “The price lock guarantees no changes to your monthly rental rate for 1 year,” and that it “begins on your contract start date.” The Self-Storage FAQ clarifies that it covers “base rent” at “U-Haul owned and managed storage facilities,” and that “U-Box portable storage containers are excluded.”
The lock “does not apply to optional add-ons like SafeStor® tenant insurance or late-payment fees.” It applies to “self-storage units rented by new customers” and “additional self-storage units rented by existing customers.” After the 12 months the rate can go up, and the page says U-Haul gives email and letter notice 30 days in advance. If you got the free month, the page says the remaining months of the first year are locked at the same rate.
Military moves
U-Haul’s Military Move Program article says: “While we don’t have a specific military discount.” The Military Moving page says “All service members are eligible to receive one month of free storage at your destination,” with the footnote “Free month of storage available at U-Haul and participating affiliate locations with one-way truck or trailer rentals.” The program article adds that without a one-way rental, service members can get a first month of self-storage free by showing a DD Form 2278, at origin or destination.
For brands that do publish a percentage off for service members, see our military discounts master list.
Students and Collegeboxes
Collegeboxes is U-Haul’s student storage and shipping service. Discounts & Specials page lists “Signup with Collegeboxes at no cost,” “Plan Now, Pay Later!” and “Save Up to 40%” on “discounted rates on domestic and international shipping.” It does not say what the 40% is measured against.
The one real code we found on U-Haul’s own site is old. A U-Haul newsroom release said students who ordered a Collegeboxes supply kit “through June 30” could use the code “MOVEOUT” for 10% off summer storage. The release dates that deadline to June 30, 2022, so we list it as expired. Our student discounts master list covers current student programs elsewhere.
U-Box containers and Moving Help
The U-Box FAQ says your quote breaks down “container rental, delivery, pickup, shipping, transit, and storage fees.” On cost control, the U-Box page says “we won’t charge you if you don’t use it” about extra containers, and “we never charge a fee to change your date or cancel your reservation.” The Military Moving page adds that “Every U-Box container reservation comes with 24 free furniture pads.”
Moving Help is U-Haul’s marketplace for hired loading and unloading help. Its How It Works page describes a “Refundable Marketplace Fee,” returned “when you leave a review within 60 days.” The Moving Help FAQ says “A minimum of two hours” applies and “we are unable to refund you for unused hours.” Neither page mentions promo codes.
Boxes, supplies and hotels
- Free shipping: The Discounts & Specials page says free standard shipping applies to “qualifying orders $50 (USD) or more” in the contiguous U.S. or $100 (CAD) in Canada. U-Haul’s military pages say “over $100,” so check your cart.
- Box buy-back: “We will buy-back any unused U-Haul box, with receipt, at any U-Haul center nationwide.”
- Hotels: the Discounts & Specials page lists corporate IDs: Choice Hotels 15% off (#00999110), Motel 6 and Studio 6 15% off (#CPUHAULM), and Wyndham 10% off (#1000007460, ask for the “U-Haul Customer Discount”). The hotel chains set the terms.
How to save at U-Haul without a coupon
- For a one-way move into a new city, pair it with a U-Haul storage unit at your destination to get the free month. Ask the location before you reserve whether it participates.
- For local moves of a few days or more, use a pickup or cargo van. That puts you under the Best Rate Guarantee.
- On one-way moves, stay inside the allowed days and miles. Extra days are $40 for trucks and extra miles are $1.00 each.
- Return the truck with the same fuel level it had at pickup.
- Order only the U-Box containers you need. U-Haul says unused ones are not charged.
- Return unused boxes with a receipt under the buy-back program.
- Be careful with coupon sites claiming U-Haul truck codes. Our guide to spotting fake coupon sites explains the warning signs.
What we could not verify
- Whether any discount code works in the U-Haul online store cart. U-Haul shows where to enter one but publishes no general code, and we did not run a checkout test.
- The per-mile rate for in-town rentals. It is set by location and only shown in a quote.
- Which storage locations take part in the free month offer, and whether a given location accepts local rentals as well as one-way ones.
- The amounts and routes behind U-Haul’s “huge discounts on trucks, trailers, and towing equipment for select routes.” U-Haul’s update page mentions them but names no routes or figures.
- The “discounts on one-way rentals” in the Military Move Program article. No amount is given.
- Any AAA member discount. We found no U-Haul page publishing one.
- The correct free-shipping threshold, which U-Haul lists as $50 on one page and $100 on others.
- What the Collegeboxes “Save Up to 40%” is measured against.
- Location-level specials. Some uhaul.com pages did not load for us.
Frequently asked questions
Does U-Haul accept promo codes?
The online store cart has an “Apply gift card or discount code” link. U-Haul did not publish any general code for truck, trailer or storage rentals on its Discounts & Specials page when we reviewed it. Its savings come through standing programs instead.
Is the free month of U-Haul storage really free?
U-Haul offers one free month with a one-way truck or trailer rental at U-Haul and participating affiliate locations, with no deposit or admin fee at participating locations. Optional add-ons like SafeStor are extra.
Does U-Haul have a military discount?
Not a percentage discount. U-Haul’s Military Move Program article says “we don’t have a specific military discount.” Service members get one month of free storage at the destination with a one-way rental, or a free first month with a DD Form 2278.
What does “$19.95” mean on a U-Haul truck?
It is the starting flat fee for an in-town rental period. Mileage, taxes, fees and optional coverage are added on top.
Does the storage price lock cover U-Box?
No. U-Haul says “U-Box portable storage containers are excluded from the 1-Year Price Lock program.” The lock covers base rent on units at U-Haul owned and managed storage facilities.
