Merchant: Netflix · What this page covers: whether a Netflix student discount exists, the Standard with ads plan, Extra Member pricing and rules, gift cards, promotions, carrier bundles from T-Mobile and Verizon, and monthly vs. annual cost math · Sources: Netflix’s own pages and the bundling carriers’ own pages, listed under Offer provenance.
Is there a Netflix student discount? No. Netflix’s Plans and Pricing help page lists three U.S. plans and no student plan, student price or education discount, and none of the other Netflix help pages we read mention one either. The same page says Netflix does not offer annual, multi-month or lifetime plans, and a separate help article says Netflix does not offer free trials. That means any “Netflix for student discount” code you see on a coupon site has nothing behind it on Netflix’s side.
Students can still pay less through the $8.99 ad plan, an Extra Member slot, gift cards and carrier bundles, each explained below with math from Netflix’s published prices. If a site promises a “Netflix discount for students” code, our guide on spotting fake coupon sites explains why to be suspicious.

Does Netflix have a student discount?
We checked Netflix’s Plans and Pricing, Free Trial, promotion, Gift Cards and account-sharing help articles. None describes a student plan, student price or student verification step. Netflix’s Free Trial article states that “Netflix does not offer free trials,” and there is no annual plan to buy at a discount, so neither workaround exists.
Spotify, by contrast, does run a student program. Our Spotify Premium Student Discount guide explains how that one works, and our student discounts master list collects programs that actually publish student pricing.
Netflix plans and prices: monthly vs. annual math
Per Netflix’s Plans and Pricing help page, the U.S. plans are:
- Standard with ads: $8.99/month. Most titles, with ads. 2 devices at once, 1080p, downloads on 2 devices. Not available with some packages or third-party services.
- Standard: $19.99/month. No ads. 2 devices at once, 1080p, downloads on 2 devices. Can add 1 Extra Member.
- Premium: $26.99/month. No ads. 4 devices at once, 4K Ultra HD with HDR, downloads on 6 devices, Netflix spatial audio. Can add up to 2 Extra Members.
The Basic plan has been discontinued, and taxes may apply depending on where you live.
Example (our math): Netflix bills monthly only, so a year is twelve charges, before tax:
- Standard with ads: $8.99 × 12 = $107.88 a year
- Standard: $19.99 × 12 = $239.88 a year
- Premium: $26.99 × 12 = $323.88 a year
Dropping from Standard to the ad plan saves $11.00 a month ($132.00 a year); from Premium, $18.00 a month ($216.00 a year). The ad plan keeps Standard’s 1080p and 2 streams; the trade is ads and most rather than all titles.
Netflix also says you can cancel online at any time. Example (our math): a student who keeps Standard with ads for nine months of the school year and cancels for three summer months pays $8.99 × 9 = $80.91 instead of $107.88, a difference of $26.97.
How Extra Members work, and when they save money
Netflix’s sharing article says an account cannot be shared outside your household, defined as the devices connected to the internet at the main place you watch. A student living away from family is likely outside it, so Netflix’s options are a separate account or an Extra Member slot. The rules:
- Standard allows 1 slot, Premium up to 2. Ad-supported, third-party billed accounts and some packages cannot add them.
- Each slot costs the owner $7.99 a month with ads or $9.99 without.
- The Extra Member must be in the same country where the owner signed up.
- An Extra Member gets their own login, 1 non-Kids profile and 1 device at a time. The with-ads version is limited to 1080p and 15 downloads per calendar month.
- Owners can change who fills a slot up to 2 times per calendar month, and an existing profile can be transferred.
Example (our math): a parent already paying for Standard at $19.99 adds their college student as an ad-free Extra Member for $9.99. The student gets ad-free Netflix for $9.99 a month instead of $19.99 for their own Standard account, a $10.00 monthly difference, or $120.00 a year. The with-ads slot at $7.99 is only $1.00 a month ($12.00 a year) cheaper than the student’s own $8.99 ad plan.
Example (our math): a Premium account at $26.99 with 2 ad-free Extra Member slots at $9.99 each costs $46.97 a month, or $563.64 a year. Split three ways, that is about $15.66 each, more than a solo $8.99 ad plan, so Extra Members mainly help students who want no ads.
Netflix gift cards for students without a credit card
Gift cards are not a discount, but they let students pay without a credit card. Per Netflix’s Gift Cards article:
- Sold at Amazon.com, Walmart.com and Giftcards.com, and in Walmart, Kroger and Dollar General stores.
- Redeem at netflix.com/redeem; new members can skip adding a payment method.
- Cards stack into one balance and do not expire. They are non-refundable and not reloadable.
- Apple-billed accounts must cancel and restart before using one.
Example (our math): on Standard with ads at $8.99, a hypothetical $50 balance covers 5 full months ($44.95) with $5.05 left over before tax. On Standard at $19.99, it covers 2 months ($39.98).
Partner promotions
Netflix says partner promotions are added as a monetary balance via netflix.com/redeem. They cannot be used on Apple-billed or package-linked accounts or by Extra Members, are non-refundable, and some expire. We found no student promotion, so this is unverified.
Carrier bundles that include Netflix
Netflix’s help center has setup articles for T-Mobile and Verizon packages; the prices below come from each carrier’s own pages.
T-Mobile Netflix On Us
T-Mobile’s Netflix On Us page says qualifying plans, including Experience More, Experience Beyond, Go5G, Go5G Plus, Go5G Next, Magenta MAX and discounted plans such as Student Perks, include Netflix Standard with ads (valued up to $8.99 a month) at no extra cost. T-Mobile’s student page says Student Perks requires college or university enrollment, an account holder 18 or older, and enrollment confirmation within 45 days and yearly; its fine print ties Netflix to a qualifying Experience More line. Upgrades cost an unpublished “discounted rate,” and the offer is “subject to change.” Netflix’s T-Mobile article adds that Extra Members are not supported on T-Mobile packages.
Example (our math): if you already pay for a qualifying T-Mobile line, getting Netflix Standard with ads through it replaces an $8.99 monthly charge, or $107.88 a year. If you would have to switch plans to get it, compare the whole phone bill.
Verizon Netflix & HBO Max (With Ads) perk
Verizon’s perk page lists a $13 a month perk with Netflix Standard with Ads and HBO Max Basic with Ads on Simplicity, Unlimited Ultimate, Unlimited Plus, Unlimited Welcome and Welcome Unlimited, Verizon Home Internet and Frontier Fiber Internet, for enrollees 18 or older. Our Verizon discounts guide covers Verizon’s separate student and teacher programs.
Example (our math): Verizon’s page claims $6.98 a month in savings, based on $8.99 for Netflix Standard with ads plus $10.99 for HBO Max Basic with Ads, minus $13. Over a year that is $156.00 for the perk vs. $239.76 for both services separately. But if you only want Netflix, $13 a month is $4.01 more than Netflix’s own $8.99 ad plan, so the perk only saves money if you would also pay for HBO Max.

What we could not verify
- Whether Netflix runs any student offer outside the United States. We read only the English U.S. help pages.
- Any student-specific partner promotion. Netflix’s promotion article describes partner balances in general but names no partners or student offers.
- The discounted rate T-Mobile charges to upgrade from Standard with ads to Standard or Premium. T-Mobile’s page says “discounted rate” without a figure.
- Exactly which T-Mobile Student Perks lines include Netflix; the Netflix On Us page and the student page’s fine print word it differently.
- Whether Verizon’s student-discounted lines can add the Netflix & HBO Max perk. Verizon’s perk page lists plan names, not discount programs.
- Netflix gift card denominations, which the Gift Cards article does not list.
- Sales tax on Netflix in your state.
