Frontier is the airline where a coupon code and a low fare are the same trick, and where both are beaten by reading the fee table. “Coupons for Frontier flights” mostly means one of three things: a promo code from Frontier’s own email (real, short-lived, and usually a percentage off base fare on select dates), the Discount Den membership (a paid fare club that unlocks member-only prices), or Kids Fly Free (a standing Discount Den perk). Discount Den: the math
Discount Den is an annual fee (Frontier shows the current price at signup; it has risen over the years and includes an enrollment fee for new members) in exchange for member-only fares on most routes. The discount per ticket varies widely — sometimes a few dollars, sometimes $20–$40 on a sale fare — and it applies to everyone on the member’s booking (up to a stated number of passengers). Two things decide whether it pays:
- How many Frontier flights you’ll book in a year. One family trip with four passengers can cover the fee. One solo flight usually can’t.
- Kids Fly Free. If you travel with a child under 15, this is the perk. On eligible dates (Frontier flags them in the search results; they’re generally off-peak and exclude holidays and summer peaks), one child flies free per adult on the base fare. Taxes, fees and any add-ons still apply.
Discount Den auto-renews. Frontier states the cancellation rules in the terms; set a reminder before the renewal date.
Promo codes: where they come from and what they cover
Frontier emails codes to subscribers — typically a percentage off base fare for travel on specific days of the week within a window, bookable for a day or two. Two limits: the discount applies to the fare, not the taxes and fees (which can be most of a cheap ticket), and the code often excludes peak dates. Coupon sites republish these after they expire. Sign up for Frontier’s email directly; that’s the only reliable source.
The part that costs more than the fare: fees
Frontier’s base fare excludes almost everything. Before comparing a Frontier price to another airline’s, add:
- Carry-on bag — charged (a personal item that fits under the seat is free). Priced lower when purchased at booking than at the airport.
- Checked bag — charged, with weight limits lower than legacy carriers.
- Seat selection — charged; skip it and you’re assigned a seat at check-in.
- Bundles — Frontier sells packages (bag + seat + flexibility) at booking; often cheaper than buying items separately if you need two or more of them.
- Change/cancel — varies by fare bundle and how close to departure.
A $39 base fare with a carry-on and a seat can land at $120+. That doesn’t make it a bad deal — it’s frequently still the cheapest total — but the comparison has to be made at the final screen.
How to actually get the lowest Frontier price
- Search logged in to Discount Den if you have it; fares differ.
- Filter by Kids Fly Free dates when traveling with children.
- Pack in a personal item if you can. The bag fee is the single biggest lever.
- Buy any bag or seat at booking, not at the airport.
- Apply an email promo code only after the above — it discounts base fare, so a low base fare plus no add-ons is where it helps most.
