Price Adjustment Policy Guide: Which Stores Refund the Difference When Prices Drop (Target, Walmart, Best Buy, Home Depot and More)

Merchants: Target, Walmart, Best Buy, Macy’s, Nordstrom, Kohl’s, Gap and Old Navy, Home Depot, Lowe’s, BJ’s, Costco, Sam’s Club, Amazon · Covers: price adjustment windows, eligible items, exclusions, how to request · Sources: each retailer’s own policy pages, listed at the end.

A price adjustment policy is a store’s promise to refund the difference when its own price drops after you buy. No code is involved: you ask, show proof of purchase, and the store credits the gap to your original payment method. Home Depot publishes the longest fixed window we found (30 days). Target, Kohl’s and Gap give about two weeks, Macy’s and Nordstrom give 10 days, and Best Buy matches its own lower price for your whole return period. Walmart.com says plainly that it does not adjust online orders that later drop in price. Lowe’s and BJ’s publish competitor price matching but no rule for their own markdowns. Costco, Sam’s Club and Amazon policy pages would not load for us, so we don’t state their terms.

Retailers that refund the difference

Home Depot: 30 days

Home Depot says it offers a price adjustment if an item’s price drops within 30 days of your purchase date, for store and online orders. Bring your receipt or order number and evidence of the lower price. Store purchases are handled in store; online orders go through customer service by phone or chat. Clearance items, special orders and products bought during promotional events are excluded. Its separate competitor-match rules leave out membership clubs such as Costco and Sam’s Club, marketplace sellers, and short-term promotions like Black Friday or flash sales. See our Home Depot coupons and military discount explainer for its other savings.

Best Buy: your return period

If Best Buy lowers its store, online or app price during your return and exchange period, it will match the lower price on request. That period is 15 days for most products (starting when you receive the item) and 60 days for My Best Buy Plus and Total members, so membership is the biggest variable here. Request through Best Buy Chat, at 1-888-BEST BUY, or from the “See details” link on your Order Details page. Our Best Buy savings explainer covers the rest of what Best Buy offers.

Target: 14 days, Target prices only

Target matches an identical item you bought within the past 14 days when it’s now cheaper at Target.com, in your store or through a Target Circle deal. Its help article says it matches Target.com prices on store purchases and store prices on Target.com purchases; the pages we read describe Target prices only, not competitors. Prices at a different Target store than yours don’t count, and Target.com matches aren’t available in Alaska and Hawaii. Request at checkout or Guest Services with your receipt (Target says screenshots and photos can’t be accepted), or through Target chat with your order number. See our Target Circle explainer for how Circle deals work.

Kohl’s: two weeks, receipt required

Kohl’s adjusts if an item you bought on sale or at regular price is now lower than what you paid in the prior two weeks and you have the original dated receipt. Store purchases must be adjusted in store; online orders go through customer service. Coupons from the original purchase must still be valid to carry into the adjustment, and Kohl’s may set additional periods when adjustments aren’t available. Our Kohl’s Cash and coupon stacking explainer covers how those coupons work.

Gap and Old Navy: 14 days, no promo codes

Gap’s customer service page allows a one-time adjustment within 14 days of your order date. Purchases made with a promo code or other discount don’t qualify unless free shipping was the only discount, and online orders can’t be adjusted in a store. The page sits in Gap Inc.’s shared customer service section, which links to Old Navy, Banana Republic and Athleta, but its text doesn’t name the brands covered. See our Gap promo codes explainer and Old Navy Encore rewards explainer.

Macy’s: 10 days

Macy’s lets you request an adjustment if an eligible item’s price drops within 10 days of your order date. Online orders: call 1-800-289-6229. Store purchases: bring your receipt to a store. Furniture and mattresses use 1-888-822-6229, with 10 days from delivery or ship date. Promotional discounts can’t be stacked onto an adjustment. More in our Macy’s Star Rewards explainer.

Nordstrom: 10 days, full price only

Nordstrom adjusts within 10 days of your in-store purchase or shipment date if you paid full price and the same color and size is still available. Items in Nordstrom savings events and the Anniversary Sale are eligible, and you get one adjustment per item. See our Nordstrom and Nordy Club explainer.

Retailers that don’t adjust for their own markdowns

Does Walmart.com adjust prices?

No. Walmart.com’s price match policy excludes “items purchased from Walmart.com that later decrease in price,” and Walmart’s corporate FAQ says the same. In Walmart U.S. stores, the match happens at checkout: tell the associate the Walmart.com price of an identical in-stock item before you pay. The store manager on duty makes the final call, and the store policy says nothing about drops after purchase. For Walmart’s warehouse club, see our Sam’s Club membership explainer.

Lowe’s and BJ’s

Lowe’s returns FAQ says that if you find a lower price after purchase, you can chat or call 1-877-465-6937 and Lowe’s will review whether it qualifies. The surrounding text refers to competitors, and we found no rule or deadline for Lowe’s lowering its own price. Its Price Promise excludes clearance, seasonal, closeout, open-box and discontinued items. More in our Lowe’s price match explainer. BJ’s TV Price Match Guarantee is requested on the day of purchase only, and its returns and refund pages don’t mention adjustments.

The honest math

These are hypotheticals showing how the rules work, not current prices.

  • Home Depot, day 25. A $299 tool drops to $249: $50 back, unless you bought it during a promotional event.
  • Best Buy, day 20. A $500 TV drops to $430. A non-member’s 15 days are up. A Plus or Total member is inside 60 days and can ask for $70.
  • Nordstrom. A $120 full-price jacket cut to $90 on day 6: $30 back. The same jacket bought on sale at $100, then cut to $90: nothing.
  • Gap. A $60 sweater bought with a 40%-off code ($36) later drops to $40. Not eligible, because promo-code purchases are excluded.
  • Kohl’s. You paid $50 minus a 20% coupon. If the coupon has expired when the item drops to $40, it can’t carry into the adjustment, which shrinks or erases the gain.

How to save with price adjustments without a coupon

  • Keep receipts and order numbers; Kohl’s requires the original dated receipt.
  • Set a reminder for each window’s last day: 10 days at Macy’s and Nordstrom, 14 at Target and Gap, 30 at Home Depot.
  • At Nordstrom and Gap, choose between a discount now and an adjustment later; discounted purchases don’t qualify. Our coupon, cashback and rewards stacking guide explains the trade-off.
  • At Walmart, check Walmart.com before paying in store.
  • Competitor price matching is a separate program; see our Staples price match, DICK’S price match and Hobby Lobby price matching explainers.

What we could not verify

  • Costco. Its help center has an article titled “Price Adjustment – Costco.com Orders,” but it blocked automated access. Costco’s Member Privileges and Conditions and Terms of Use don’t mention adjustments. Our Costco member savings explainer covers what Costco does publish.
  • Sam’s Club. Its “Price differences and price matching clubs” and Advertising & Pricing Policy help pages blocked automated access.
  • Amazon. Its return policy and “Pre-Order Price Guarantee” help pages blocked automated access, so we can’t say whether Amazon adjusts regular items.
  • Old Navy. Its own price adjustment section didn’t render.
  • Whether Target, Kohl’s, Macy’s or Nordstrom exclude Black Friday or doorbuster pricing; their adjustment pages don’t name those events.
  • How Nordstrom wants requests submitted; its policy links to an account page without steps.
  • Whether Walmart stores or Lowe’s ever adjust for their own later markdowns.

FAQ

Which store has the longest price adjustment window?

Home Depot’s 30 days is the longest fixed window we found. Best Buy members can get up to 60 days because Best Buy ties adjustments to the return period.

What is Walmart’s price adjustment policy?

Walmart.com doesn’t adjust items that later drop in price. Walmart stores match an identical item’s Walmart.com price at checkout.

What is Costco’s price adjustment policy?

We couldn’t load Costco’s policy page, so we aren’t stating one. Check Costco’s help center article or ask at the membership counter.

Can I get a price adjustment on a Black Friday purchase?

It depends. Best Buy excludes items denoted as Black Friday pricing, and Home Depot excludes products bought during promotional events. Other stores’ pages don’t say, so ask first. Our Black Friday deals guide covers the sale event itself.
